How early do travellers need to book in for a domestic flight in Australia?

Still doing my essment and organising an itinerary. How early would you need to book in at Sydney Airport for a flight to Melbourne? My parents and Virgin Blue website are saying 90min, but I'm sure I heard my boss say he arrived at Perth Airport 30min before his flight to Sydney a few days ago. Thanks again for your help!
