Chimaltenango Guatemala, anyone been there?

I have a friend who wants me to go to her home with her in Guatemala. Is it safe in Chimaltenango and as an American what can I exspect. Is there an airport there or do I need to travel once there. Any input on this city would be much helpful. Also is this a tourist are or a remote location. Thank you.
